The Government today reaffirmed its commitment to providing concessional education loans to all segments of society and described the scheme started by it a "substantial success".
Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena, during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, said providing concessional education loans to students is one of the priority sectors of the Government and a scheme to that effect was started in 2009.
He said Rs 52,000 crore has already been given in advance to 24 lakh accounts.
He said the Government does not maintain data as to how many Dalit or minority or widow students obtained loans under the scheme.
Finance Minister P Chidambaram described the scheme as a substantial success and said he was very passionate about the scheme, which he claimed was one of the biggest run by any government in the world.
