Updated on: Thursday, November 17, 2011

The Coimbatore District Collector assured to look into the complaints by two college-going tribal students that they were being denied educational loans by a nationalised bank for the past one year, even as the bank concerned maintained it had already santioned the loans.

M Muthu, studying BSc Computer science and N Murugavel, pursuing BBA at a private Arts and Science college here had petitioned Collector M Karunagaran, alleging they were denied education loan for paying their fees.

In their petition, they said that they had applied for education loan from Indian Overseas Bank on the city outskirts for their second year studies.

However, they were denied the loans despite repeated pleas and as a last resort, they were approaching the district administration, they said.

When reporters brought the incident to the notice of Karunagaran, who returned from Chennai after attending the two-day the district collectors' meeting there, he said he would seriously look into this issue.

Both students are residents of Kopanari, a tribal hamlet at Tholampalayam in Seeliyur on the outskirts of the district.

Meanwhile, a communication from the District Lead Bank (Canara Bank), issued tonight claimed that IOB, Dhayanur Branch had already sanctioned the loans for both the students on 16-9-2011, under which Muthu was sanctioned Rs 66,000 and Murugavel Rs 79,500.

The Canara Bank Manager, Vanangamudi, said in the clarification that IOB had also asked the students to submit the receipt of the fees paid by them to the College, so that the loans could be handed over either inpidually or to the College.
