Tirunelveli: Tamil and English will remain the medium of instruction in the common education system that would be implemented in a phased manner from the following academic year, said state minister for higher education K. Ponmudy.
English too would continue to be a medium of instruction until parents and students are prepared to accept Tamil.
Speaking at the 17th convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University here on Friday, Mr Ponmudy, who is also the university's pro-chancellor, said the present government has inaugurated seven new government arts and science colleges and 11 new engineering colleges apart from instigating shift system in all government colleges during the past three years.
Referring to the uniform syllabi system, the minister said the government was careful about implementing the system in a phased manner.
Overnight implementation of the system was not possible, as "we should do justice to all boards of education". Hence, the system will be implemented for class-I and class-VI in the ensuing academic year, he said.
On the whole 19,736 candidates successfully completed their graduation, postgraduation, M.Phil and doctorate degrees.
