Australian Universities are again witnessing a rise in applications for admission from Indian students. The premier of Australia's Victoria province Mr. Ted Ballieu who is on his indian visit said that the southern nation was totally safe for Indian students. The state has taken steps to ensure safety of the students and are very serious on the issue, he said while talking to reporters at a function to award 10 scholarships for PhD studets from India going to various Australian Universities. Seven agreements for association were also signed between India and Australia.
The year 2010-11 saw a major decline in the number of studets going to Australia on the backdrop of more than 100 incidents of attack on Indian students in Australia.According to the Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese there was nearly a drop of 40% compared to the peak of 2008 and 2009. The decline was not limited to Indian students alone but in the number of students from all countries which was due to overall economic scenario and high dollar value.
According to Mr. Varghese the new visa rules which allows students to stay for a few years after completing their degree and work were attracting more applications.
