St Xavier’s College Grounds came alive with students, past and present on January 25. The eleventh chapter of ‘Beyond Barriers’, the annual musical extravaganza of the alumni association brought together singers Torsha Sarkar, Remo Fernandes and his band Microwave Papadums and Jawed Ali of Jashne bahara and Kajra re fame on the same platform.

Coming first, Torsha set the mood with foot-tapping Bollywood numbers like Sheila ki jawaani, Parda parda and Iktara. This was to be followed by the most awaited performance of the evening by none other than the Humma humma man Remo. From popular songs to his trademark Goan number Maya ya, he kept the crowd on its toes. His was truly a class-act. He even convinced Father Felix Raj, principal of St. Xavier’s College to croon along with him. “Father Felix should cover his ears, because I have to say that some of my best moments have been spent outside the classroom bunking lectures”, beamed the sprightly 57 year old.

Jawed Ali, coming right after Remo lived up to the performances that preceded his one. An instant hit with the masses, he had fans dancing and screaming along with him. He served up his hit numbers from Jodha Akbar, Ghajni  to Tum Mile and Delhi-6. But the magic of kajra re had to be seen to be believed.

Members of the St. Xavier’s College Calcutta Alumni Association donated a cheque of Rs 7 lakh to Father Felix Raj for the building of a hostel to accommodate more students. Thanking their efforts, Father said, “Their gesture means that we can not only go beyond barriers but also beyond boundaries. With their support we have become autonomous and hopefully we will soon become a university too.”
