The centenary session of the Indian Science Congress will be held in Kolkata from January 3-7 next year, with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presiding over the event.
Singh, who is the General President of the 100th Indian Science Congress, is expected to unveil the new science, technology and innovation policy at the five-day event.
The largest national science event, hosted by the Calcutta University, is expected to attract over 10,000 delegates including Nobel laureates and eminent scientists from India and abroad.
This is the thirteenth time the Indian Science Congress is being hosted by Kolkata. The city had hosted the first Science Congress in 1914 and hosted the event last in 1995.
The theme of the Indian Science Congress (ISC) is 'Science for Shaping the Future of India'.
Thirumalachari Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, told reporters here, "It has been well realised that Science, Technology and Innovation are the three pillars from which future societies could not only benefit but also rely for solving social challenges."
He said the magnificence and glory of this celebrated edition of ISC would be fully reflected in the activities associated with the summit.
The manner in which the new Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2013 could be implemented would form the central theme of the annual session.
The 'Pride of India' exhibition showcasing cutting-edge technologies, leading scientific products and services, and achievements of India's leading public and private sector organisations would also be held alongside the ISC.
