The diamond jubilee celebrations of Modern High School for Girls (MHS) culminated with the release of a special cover commemorating the school on its foundation day.
The post-master general of Kolkata region, Rajiv Umrao, released the special cover in the presence of the chairperson of the school, Nirmala Birla, who delivered the closing speech, Devi Kar, principal of MHS and the students and staff of the school.
As a sea of students assembled on the field to mark the special occasion by waving coloured paper flags bearing the MHS logo, principal Devi Kar offered a ‘thanksgiving prayer for the flow of conscience, for life itself and the freedom to enjoy it’.
Nirmala Birla, chairperson, addressed the gathering, “I feel happy and proud to stand here and declare that MHS has completed 60 years.” The programme concluded with the singing of the school song. Chocolates were distributed amongst the students on this important day in the school’s calendar.
A philatelic exhibition of first-day and special covers was put up in the school hall on important personalities, events, buildings and flora and fauna of India to celebrate the occasion.
The in-house collection had been composed, researched and mounted over just a week by a group of senior students with contributions from the faculty and some from Nirmala Birla’s personal collection. The exhibition also marked the beginning of the philately club in the school.
Some of the covers paid homage to illustrious Indian personalities as well as international icons. The exhaustive collection spanned events such as 100 years of cinema and eradication of malaria to special ones on the Indian bride, cricket, Christmas, and beaches of India. Buildings of Kolkata also found a place in the collection ranging from important academic institutions to heritage structures.
Umrao, postmaster general, Kolkata, said, “It is a great privilege to be involved in this momentous occasion. These 60 years is a long time and most of the country was developed in these 60 years. The school has witnessed those ups and downs, steered by remarkable leadership.”
