SBIOA boys triumph in Young World quiz

Updated on: Wednesday, October 12, 2011

The regional round of The Hindu Young World Quiz, a newspaper in education (NIE) initiative of The Hindu, turned out to be a feast of trivia and facts for the excited school students who arrived here from Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Karur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Karaikal districts.

The anxious participants muttered and discussed probable answers before the quiz started and continued in the same vein during the engrossing finals as the questions tested their wits and spontaneity.

Throwing open questions ranging from details of the ‘uthradam' star in the Tamil almanac to the ancient Stonehenge monument in Britain, quiz master V.V.Ramanan had the audience glued to their seats for more than two hours. Questions on sports, such as, who scored the winning goal for Spain in the 2010 football World Cup and the ones on cinema – where the finalists had to deliver and find the factual error in a punch dialogue from the Rajnikanth-starrer Sivaji-enthused the grey cells of the young quizzers.

In the end, it was the team from SBIOA Matriculation Higher Secondary School which asserted its dominance in the school quizzing circuit in this region with a comfortable win. The school has won the title for the third year in running. The team comprising A.Ashwin Natraj and S.A.Syed Abrar took the competition by its horns from the word go, spouting answers with ease. The team ended up with an unassailable lead midway through the quiz.

Aparna Seshadri and H.R.Abhinav from RSK Higher Secondary School turned out to be the dark horses. Ending the first round on a low note, they built their points over the remaining three rounds and finished second.

However, it was a close battle for the third spot between the teams of L.Muthu Shanmugam and R.Raj Sidharth from The Aditya Birla Public School, Reddipalayam, Ariyalur, and B.Pranamika and S.Akshaya of Sri Akilandeswari Vidyalaya.

The latter, dominating the final two sessions, stood at the third place just before the final question. But the duo from The Aditya Birla Public School inched ahead. The team from Mahatma Gandhi Centenary Vidhyala would have had a podium finish had they not taken a gamble with the buzzer minutes into the first round.

A total 734 students forming 367 teams from 101 schools took part in the event. Airtel Super Singer winner P.Sai Sharan, chief guest, distributed prizes after enthralling the audience with a couple of his favourite numbers.
