Private schools in Bihar to be registered with govt: Official

Updated on: Monday, October 03, 2011

The Bihar government today said that all private schools will have to be registered with it in conformity with the Right to Education Act.

"The private schools have no no option but to get registered with the state government under the RTE," the Principal Secretary (HRD) Anjani Kumar Singh told reporters.

Justifying the state government's insistence on registration of all private schools with the concerned authorities, he said that under the RTE the state government was mandated to monitor quality of education, adequate number of teachers in schools and other infrastructure.

"We cannot let sub-standard private schools to function in the state and jeopardise the future of the students," Singh said.

On the private schools' plea about the registration issue being sub-judice and the state government cannot force these institutions to register themselves with the state authorities, the Principal Secretary (HRD) said that the no no court has given injunction against registration of private schools and so these institutions obtain registration from the local authorities in view of the enforcement of the RTE.

Singh said that those private institutions not registering themselves with the state authorities will be imposed fine for violation of the provision of the RTE.

Over 25,000 private schools across the state had observed a total strike yesterday against the state government's decision to seek registration of these schools.
