Inadequate qualification: Maha cancels professors appointment

Updated on: Monday, September 26, 2011

Maharashtra government has cancelled the appointment of a professor in its medical college on the ground of possessing inadequate qualification.

An expert committee, in its report, said Dr Ajay Keshwani, Associate Professor at the Government Medical College at Yavatmal, did not possess the requisite one year research experience to enable his qualification of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) to be treated at par with the MD degree.

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) had advertised three posts of Associate professor in Pediatrics for government medical colleges in 2008. Of the 15 candidates who appeared for the interviews, 12 were M.D. (Paediatric) qualification and two were D.N.B. (Paediatric).

MPSC declared the result in 2009 in which Dr Keshwani, Dr Pallavi Saple and Dr Madhavi Hallare were selected, an official said.

After it was noticed that Keshwani was selected despite availability of candidates with MD degree, the aggrieved candidates lodged a complaint. The government then directed the Director of Medical Education to probe the matter and submit a report.

A three-member committee was set up and it submitted the report saying Keshwani did not possess the required research experience of one year to be treated at par with an MD candidate, the official said.

Citing Medical Council of India norms, the panel said Keshwani held only two years and four months' experience when he was considered for a post which called for a minimum five years' experience.

Also, Keshwani, who holds the DNB degree awarded by the National Board of Examinations, did not have the requisite one-year research experience after getting the degree, it said.
