Telangana agitation: Private schools forced to shut on Sept 20

Updated on: Wednesday, September 21, 2011

Major private schools in and around Hyderabad were forced to declare a holiday on Sept 20 after the Telangana Joint Action Committee warned them of consequences.

JAC leader M Kodandaram said all missionary and private schools in the state capital should be closed and take part in the ongoing general strike "respecting the sentiments of the people of Telangana".

This is the first time in the ongoing agitation for a separate state that the JAC issued a threat to private schools. Kodandaram specifically mentioned names of Delhi Public School and Oakridge International School even as he warned other private aided and un-aided schools as well.

He, however, did not specify how long the schools should remain closed. Following this, many private managements sent SMSes to parents late in the night informing that the schools would remain closed on Sept 20.

The quarterly examinations are scheduled to start from Wednesday but, with the threat from Telangana protagonists, anxious parents are left worrying about the schedule going haywire.
