VSDB suggests courses to generate jobs for locals at Mihan

Updated on: Wednesday, September 21, 2011

With a view to generate employment opportunities for the local people in the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (Mihan), along with the special economic zone (SEZ), the Vidarbha Statutory Development Board (VSDB) has suggested 288 various educational courses to universities in Vidarbha.

In this connection, the VSDB recently held meetings with the authorities of Rashtra Sant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, Amravati University, Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (Agriculture University), state government's Department of Higher and Technical Education.

Sources said that the vice chancellors of these universities have shown willingness to start 113 courses, including IT, aviation and various engineering courses, from the ongoing academic year 2011-12. But, the courses are yet to take off as Mihan officials could not provide a list of companies as demanded by the universities.

"We asked them to provide information on companies, which are supposed to start their operations in Mihan, so that, we could start only those courses. However, despite repeated requests, we haven't received any communication from their side. There is no point in starting courses, which will have no future in the project," official sources from Nagpur University told.

He added that many of the courses including aviation, hotel management and mechanical engineering, are already there in various colleges in Nagpur. "About the rest of the courses, we are still awaiting response from the Mihan officials," he said.

VSDB chairman Tukaram Bidkar said, "We have not done any review regarding this, but soon, we will have a meeting with all VCs to discuss the issue. The governor's secretary Vikas Chandra Rastogi had written a letter to all VCs asking them to inform about the fate of those courses. This shows that even the Governor's office is serious about it,"he added.

The VSDB has identified 19 sections of the society, which will be contacted to gather inputs on the problem areas in Vidarbha and ways to remove it. Workshops for experts from these identified categories will be held shortly.

Their opinion will be incorporated in the VSDB report being submitted to an expert committee. MPs, MLAs, MLCs, Zilla Parishad presidents and mayors have been sent letters seeking their views.

Board member and former Maharashtra Minister of State for Law and Judiciary Madhukar Kimmatkar said that they are also thinking of visiting each district and meet collectors, ZP chief executive officers and tehsildars and get inputs from them.
