Updated on: Tuesday, September 13, 2011

Charging Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) authorities with adopting an "indifferent" attitude towards Scheduled Castes and Backward classes, a Ph.d scholar with Geography Department began an indefinite fast in front of the Vice Chancellor office here.

Rohtash Kumar, who is also the chairman of Dr. Ambedkar Missionaries Vidhyarthi Association, has threatened the authorities that he would not break his fast till the demands of his Association were met.

The Association is demanding filling of backlog of the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes in vacancies of the University Campus school which is being run by MDU authorities and withdrawal of the authorities decision in which 68 lecturers of university college were merged in various departments of the university two years ago.

Rohtash Kumar said the university campus school was established by the authorities in 1984 but not a single appointment had been made to the reserved post during last 27 years.

“The authorities have tried to snatch the right of the educated unemployed youths by merging 68 lecturers of University College into University Teaching Department (UTD) as most of vacant seats in almost every traditional course have been filled due to this inappropriate move,” said Rohtash.

At least 12 students of the university also sat on a day-long dharna in solidarity with Rohtash on the first day of the agitation.

Meanwhile, three outfits- Haryana Pradesh Chamar Sangharsh Samity and Anusuchit jaati pichhda varga MDU and Dr Ambedkar Students Front- have announced their full support to the agitation of Kumar.
