Gujrat: Class X board exam lose weightage to internal evaluation

The education committee of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided to introduce constant and overall evaluation in class X from June 2012. This means that the board exams will carry a weightage of 70 marks while school exams conducted over the year will carry a weightage of 30 per cent.

The GSHSEB had introduced constant evaluation in class 9 from this year and the system will be introduced in SSC in 2012 as part of the natural progression.

The education committee of the GSHSEB met on Friday and a series of other decision were also taken.

The board has decided to rollback its early decision that students of the HSC general stream will be allowed to answer their papers only in three languages namely English, Hindi and Gujarati. This decision taken a month ago had met with stiff opposition as there is a sizeable number of students studying in other languages including Urdu. The education committee on Friday decided that the students of HSC general stream will be allowed to take exam in all the permitted languages in which they have studied in the schools.

In HSC (science), there are only 133 students from other medium and the board has decided to continue with its decision to allow them to answer the papers in English, Gujarati and Hindi.

Meanwhile, the education committee decided that uttar-bunayadi, vocational and technical courses in class 8 will now be transferred to class 9. This decision was taken to facilitate inclusion of class 8 in the primary schools.

Secretary of the board R K Zanzrukiya said that the constant evaluation for class X will ensure that students are not assessed on the basis of their performance in the board exam only.
