TN govt doubles prize money for medal winners

As part of its efforts to encourage differently abled, the Tamil Nadu govt announced rewarding such persons topping Classes 10 and 12 Board exams with cash prize of a maximum of Rs 12,000 and Rs 18,000.

"From this year onwards, students with speech and hearing disablities in government-run schools who score the top three state ranks will be awarded cash prize of Rs 18,000, Rs 12,000 and Rs 9,000," Social Welfare Minister Selvi Ramajayam said.

Making the announcements for her department for the year 2011-12 in the Assembly, she said the prize would be Rs 12,000, Rs 9,000 and Rs 6,000 for Class 10 toppers.

District level toppers in both classes will also be awarded cash prize, she said, adding education assistance would be extended to toppers of Class 10 and a sum of Rs 35.70 lakh would be spent for this scheme.

She said the government would replace the present hearing aid for the hearing imparied which have problems in daily use, with Ear Level hearing aid having advanced features. In the first phase of the scheme, 1000 school and college students would be covered at a cost of Rs one crore, she said.

The government will also provide voice software enabled laptops to 220 visually disabled students of Classes 11 and 12 in government and government-aided schools, she added.
