Protests mar Teacher's Day celebrations in Meghalaya

Updated on: Wednesday, September 07, 2011

Two teacher associations and a non-teaching employees' union demonstrated against the Meghalaya government's alleged apathy towards their demands during the Teacher's Day celebrations in the state capital.

The Meghalaya College Teachers Association (MCTA), Khasi Jaintia Higher Secondary Adhoc Teachers Association (KJHSATA) and the Meghalaya College Non-Teaching Employees Association (MCNTEA) boycotted Teachers day functions and organised seperate rallies protesting the government's 'failure' to release the arrears and salaries.

MCTA President Charles Reuben Lyngdoh said at a protest rally at the Students Field that MCTA has been demanding implementation of the revised pay scales as per the states fourth pay commission for the college teachers and release of arrears but the state remained unresponsive.

Alleging that the government lacked seriousness in addressing concerns in higher education, the MCTA members said that the government's attitude cast serious doubts on its commitment to education in the state.

About 300 ad-hoc teachers of higher secondary schools under the KJHSATA also boycotted teachers day celebration by calling for a sit-in protest and observing black flag day at Madan Iewrynghep. They were protesting the government 'failure' to release their salaries since March last.
