Magical Hannover for agricultural economics

Updated on: Tuesday, August 30, 2011

German universities provide a challenging yet conducive atmosphere for higher studies and research. They also contribute to making students thorough professionals. Leibniz Universitaet Hannover was started in 1831 and is a prestigious member of technical universities (TU9) in Germany.

I landed in this beautiful university filled with greenery with an MBA in Finance and Marketing and a subsequent experience in Indian Banking sector. Never did I imagine that I will be pursuing doctoral work in Germany. My primary concern was to get a job consistent with my qualifications and experience.

I had the opportunity to interact with the academia at Leibniz University and found them extremely open to explore different disciplines. For the first time I understood that being a management professional is not a barrier to pursue research in Agricultural Economics. I have enrolled for a doctoral thesis in agricultural economics with the primary objective of researching data related to black pepper in Kerala.

This has given me an opportunity to visit my country of birth for long periods and study the conditions. I doubt whether I would have had this possibility even from any of the Indian universities. I enjoy working with my professor who is extremely amiable and helpful. I have the liberty to do the research in my own way and the professor never imposes his views. I am respected as a professional and treated on par with my colleagues.

The city of Hannover is also home to some of the biggest trade fairs in Germany like the CeBIT, Industry Fair (Hannover Messe) where we have wonderful interaction between students and top notch corporate companies and executives worldwide.

The university has a friendly atmosphere for students and researchers like me to make some lifetime friends and have an enriched social life. The international office welcomes the students and also helps in finding them accommodation and taking care of their needs.

We have a vibrant young Indian community at our university. We have also recently opened Indian Academic Society of Hannover (IASH www.ias-hannover.de). This society especially helps Indian students and young professionals coming to Hannover. There are also Indian shops available, hence Indian food is not a problem.

I love the city of Hannover for its warm-hearted people, its beautiful seasons and the Hannover garden through which I go jogging every day. It is amazing to see the spring, summer, autumn and winter grace Hannover in all its charm and splendour. Snowing in winter, especially during Christmas and New Year is a magical experience. Life in Hannover is peaceful, extremely safe and full of fun. As a woman I can jog on the streets even at midnight alone.

In my experience, Leibniz University of Hannover is an encouraging destination for higher studies and research. The university officials are very helpful in guiding us through the admission process. For more information regarding programmes and courses, visit http:/www.uni-hannover.de/en/index.php
