Paid internship reintroduced in BDS Course

Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has granted approval for re-introduction of one year rotational, compulsory and paid internship in Bachelor of Dental Surgery course.

Accordingly, the tenure of BDS Course will be for a period of four years, plus one year internship, with effect from academic year 2011-12 and would be implemented in respect of the batches admitted from the year 2008-09.
 
The revised BDS course - 3rd Amendment Regulations, 2011, also incorporates three months compulsory rural attachment.
   
The step would go a long way in benefitting the training and future of about one lakh undergraduate students of Dentistry, said a Health Ministry release.
   
All parts of internship will be done in a dental college duly recognised and approved by Dental Council of India for the purpose of imparting education to dental graduates in the country.
   
The compulsory rotational paid internship is aimed at improving training in all the different specialities of dentistry, Health Ministry officials said.
  
They added that on critical analysis it was realised that Internship period in dental and medical course provides for better opportunities for practical training and skill development. Internship program in dentistry are mandatory in most of the countries across the world.
