BMC asked to explain mechanism to monitor mid-day meal scheme

The Bombay High Court directed city Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar to file an affidavit on the mechanism it plans to develop for monitoring food quality provided to children as part of mid-day meal scheme.

A pision bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice R P Sondur-Baldota was hearing a PIL filed by one Vikas Dandwate in 2009 against non-implementation of the scheme.

The court has asked the corporation to explain how it plans to monitor quality of food provided at schools and hygiene of kitchens where the meal is prepared.

"The BMC asks food suppliers to send photographs of the kitchen where they prepare food. But there is no means of verifying whether the photos are of the same kitchen where they make food for children," argued Pradeep Thorat, appearing for the petitioner.

He further said there should be a centralised kitchen for each ward, which would be monitored by the corporation itself.
