Doctor of Science

One of India’s most prestigious and globally acclaimed education institutions, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on Sunil Bharti Mittal, chairman & group CEO, Bharti Enterprises.

The degree has been conferred on Mittal for his outstanding contribution to nation building as an entrepreneur. It was awarded to him by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh on the occasion of 57th Convocation of IIT Kharagpur.
 
Mittal said, “I am honoured to receive this recognition from one of the most respected education institutions in India that has contributed to the nation’s development through excellence in technical education and research. Today, not only are Indian corporations contributing to India’s growth story but also taking the Indian success stories to the world. I believe this recognition is also a tribute to Indian entrepreneurship and will be a source of inspiration for budding entrepreneurs.”
 
The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) has also conferred its highest honour ‘The Honorary Fellowship’ for 2006 on Mittal for his scientific vision and invaluable contribution to the progress of electronics & telecommunications. Other notable degrees include Doctor of Laws by the University of Leeds, UK and Doctor of Science by the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology.
 
Over the years, Mittal has received several recognitions for his achievements and contribution to India’s development as an entrepenuer. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours, by the Government of India for his contribution towards the development of a world-class telecom sector in the country further resulting in the economic development of the nation.

He was recently awarded the INSEAD Business Leader of the World Award 2011 for setting new standards and building successful, sustainable, global enterprises that span multiple cultures, embrace diversity, and contribute to the economic and social prosperity. Mittal received the Global Economy Prize 2009 by The Kiel Institute, Germany and the US-India Business Council also honored him with Global Vision Award 2008.
