School children confined to room for two days

Updated on: Monday, August 15, 2011

Twenty children of St. Xavier's English Medium School in Kolhapur were detained in a classroom for two days as punishment for participating in football matches without the permission of the head of the school.

The students were allegedly detained on Friday and Saturday during school hours. They were marked as absent and not allowed to attend classes.

The activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) rushed to the school and rescued the children. Father Robert Das, Principal, denied detaining the children and claimed that they were kept in a separate class as punishment for breaching discipline.

The activists urged Education Extension Officer R.D. Patil to come to the school, where the children narrated their plight to him. Parents too rushed to the school on learning about the incident.

Father Das called a meeting of the parents on Saturday evening and apologised to them. The Education Department has decided to institute an inquiry.

Sexual harassment

In another incident, about a fortnight ago, a nine-year-old girl studying in an English-medium school in Sangli had complained that a man had attempted to sexually harass her by taking her to the first floor of the school building under the pretext of stitching her school uniform.

A group of women's activists went to the school and demanded an inquiry into the incident.
