South City International School organised an innovative fashion show, with ‘nature-inspired-couture’ as its theme, to celebrate International Youth Day on August 12. “We thought what better way to celebrate it than to have a fashion show with a difference,” said principal, John Bagul.

The inter-house competition was divided into two categories – ‘elements of nature’ and ‘recycle your way to style’ with four groups participating in each category, comprising eight students in each group. Group A consisted of students of Classes VI and VII, while Group B was constituted of Classes VIII and IX. This ‘educative fashion show’ was to urge students to ‘appreciate Mother Earth’ as principal, Bagul added, “If the earth itself is not around, all the other issues are immaterial.”

The fashion show was choreographed and anchored by Jessica Gomes, model and new member of the school faculty. Agnimitra Paul, Dev R Nil and Leena Shanghavi judged the competition. These acclaimed fashion designers enthusiastically chorused that they were honoured to be there. While Agnimitra lauded this innovative effort by the school, Dev joked, “I want to be a student again” when prodded by Jessica to speak about his experience. Those who braved the inclement weather, to be a part of this unique creative effort included Swastika Mukherjee, Sarika Todi and Neeraj Surana.

The basic notion behind the fashion show was not just environmental awareness, but as principal Bagul said it was a ‘two pronged approach’ to inspire students to look at fashion designing and modeling as a wonderful career choice to make what was as rewarding as other careers today. He hoped that the students would take Jessica as a role model who personified brain, poise, self-confidence and hard work in a glamorous profession that comes with its own rigours.

“The designing was fantastic, and the best part was to make all the children think creatively,” said Nil and Leena added that the models walked well. The level of professionalism on display was quite remarkable considering ‘the kids were having their tests so they just had two days to prepare’ stressed Jessica.

Innovators House came out on top in the first category while Achievers was adjudged first in the second category with Dev declaring their work to be the ‘best examples of recycling’. The Innovators received a special prize for scoring the maximum points to resounding cheers from the young audience. All the participants and winners were given gift vouchers and hampers from The Natures Co respectively.
