AICTE slaps Rs 2 lakh fine on Nagpur varsity

The Nagpur University (NU) has paid a fine of Rs 2 lakh to All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for failing to renew approval of its institution, Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT), sources close to the varsity said.

LIT's batch for the academic year 2010-11 was not approved by the apex body for technical education on account of various loopholes, including poor maintenance and failure to fill up large scale vacancies, they said.

AICTE's earlier approval was only for 2008-10 session and thereafter, LIT should have applied for extension, the sources said.

The NU officials failed to send proposal for renewal of approval in time. This shows sheer apathy and mismanagement on the part of the authorities, they said.

The Finance and Accounts Department of the varsity has sought recovery of the fine amount from the officials responsible for the lapses, the sources said.

NU Registrar Mahesh Yenkie confirmed the development and said the fine has been paid. "However, the good news is that AICTE has renewed its approval. Moreover, we're trying our best to plug deficiencies pointed out by the AICTE team during its visit," he added.
