CU to write to Xaviers on post-grad

Updated on: Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Kolkata: The vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, Suranjan Das, has drafted a letter to be sent to St Xavier’s College on Wednesday, advising the college to open postgraduation courses in all the subjects in which it offers graduation courses.

“We will offer them assistance in every possible way in starting the post graduation courses. This will be done in order to avoid complications when graduate students from autonomous colleges seek admission to post graduate courses in CU,” said Das.

Henceforth, the university will also request all colleges receiving autonomy from CU to start their own post graduate courses in subjects they offer graduation courses.

The decision, which was taken by Calcutta University’s syndicate on Tuesday, will only be for this year. It was decided that graduates from St Xavier’s College will be treated as CU students only. The decision on Tuesday came as a relief since there was confusion over admission of students from St Xavier’s into CU’s post graduate courses, with the college churning out its first stream of graduates after receiving autonomy from the Calcutta University three years back.

The university has around 13,000 seats in its various postgraduation courses. During admission, 95% of the seats are reserved for students of Calcutta University while the remaining 5% are open to students from other universities. Tuesday’s decision will mean that St Xavier’s graduates will also be part of the 95%.

However, parity between the marks achieved by students in Xavier’s and colleges affiliated with CU will be normalized by a statistical method, said pro vice-chancellor (academics) Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay.
