Goa University (GU) has finally embraced the Goa Sports Policy, paving the way for students in the varsity and affiliated colleges to earn sports merit marks, which ranges from 10 to 52.

Governor S S Sidhu, GU's chancellor gave the nod to the sports policy last week.

Any student of GU or affiliated colleges can now avail of the 'sports merit marks' for participation in an event approved by the sports council of the University, National Sports Federation having recognition from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Indian Olympic Association or Association of Universities.

Students will, however, have to take prior approval from their principal, or head of the department, to participate in order to qualify for the merit marks, Varsity sources said.

The university has pided sports events into six categories such as international events, national events, inter-varsity events, etc, for assignment of merit marks.
