The Himachal Pradesh government today defended its decision to allow setting up of private universities in the state, saying the Union HRD Minister has himself remarked that 1,000 more varsities are required to meet the demand-supply mismatch in the education sector.

Reacting to growing opposition from the HP Congress against "indiscriminate" opening of private universities in the state, Education Minister Ishwar Dass Dhiman told reporters here, "Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has himself said that in the next 10 years we will need 1,000 more varsities and 45,000 colleges."

Even after opening 12 private universities, saturation stage has not reached, he said, dispelling apprehensions that a large number of varsities could result in low intake of students.

The private universities in the state have generated 5,876 jobs, Dhiman claimed.
