A guide to Delhi University facilities

Two new girls' hostels have been setup at the Dhaka complex to cater to the increasing number of students taking admission in the Delhi University every year. Girl students will now no longer have to worry about finding a PG accommodation or a rented flat. The hostels are just about one and a half kilometres away from the north campus. The two new hostels have a capacity of 1000 students each. Also, until last year, hostel facilities were restricted to postgraduate students.

However, this year, even undergraduate students are availing of the hostel facility. The timings of the hostel are from 7am to 8pm. However, with prior permission, the deadline to enter the hostel premises can be extended till 10pm. Students will also be allowed guest facilities. They can invite friends over for a night. Also, special arrangements will be made for parents. Since three girls' hostels have already been in the same complex for the last threefour years, DU already has a bus service in place for students.

Call centre

DU offers a new 24x7 call-centre for its students. From career-related issues to academic confusion, students can ask counsellors anything they want to. Brainchild of Dinesh Singh, vice-chancellor, DU, the objective of the call-centre is to help students. Since the call-centre will be functional on all working days of the year, students need not wait, and can get their doubts cleared immediately.

Student passes

Counters for bus passes have been opened by DTC for students of DU. Any student of the university pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate course, can avail of the student-pass facility. The counters are open on all six days of the week (9am to 5pm), except on Sundays and gazetted holidays.

Bus service

Students can now avail of the DTC low-floor bus service facility at DU's north campus, which starts from the metro station. These buses will ply on two routes starting at 8.30am daily, covering all colleges in the campus and other important places within the university campus.

Connect better

The Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) plans to start 12 more centres in order to increase connectivity among colleges and to enhance better student-teacher interaction. These centres are well-scattered around the city for easy access by students. Apart from establishing more centres, the ILLL is also planning to start a common portal.

On camera

One of DU's major concerns is the issue of student safety. However, in order to ensure students' safety, colleges under DU have installed CCTV surveillance on their campuses. Kirori Mal College, which had 16 CCTV cameras, has increased the count to 36 this academic year. Ramjas College, with 36 cameras on campus, has installed night-vision-enabled cameras in its hostel premises.

All play

The DU stadium that was with the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) for the rugby matches during the CWG, will be made available for DU's sports enthusiasts, this year onwards. However,the stadium is being upgraded and its facilities can soon be utilised by students.The university has plans to turn the stadium into a multi-purpose arena with both outdoor and indoor facilities

Reading hour

The Delhi University Library System (DULS) has more than 34 libraries in its fold The university has advanced its web activity with the subscription of 63 high quality electronic databases being made available through campus network to teachers, students and research scholars 21 more databases are also accessible through UGC-INFONET Digital Library Consortium DULS also promotes Open Access e-resources and conducts innovative Information Literacy Programmes (ILP) for the benefit of students, researchers and faculty members Out of the total collection of 15.05 lakh, the DULS libraries have been able to place the bibliographical information on the OPAC system with 11,35,843 books.

Study-tours abroad

The university is planning to send its students abroad for short study-tours. This step is being taken to enhance more interaction among Indian and foreign students. Under this initiative, three batches of 25 students each will be selected for study tours to Australia, China, Colombo, Dhaka and Kathmandu, in the month of October. The selection process will be conducted after classes begin, to decide on students who will be sent abroad. Selections will be completely based on merit. Students will initially be sent to these countries for two to three weeks, but in the near future the university might even send them to study an entire semester. Students will not have to pay. The university has spoken to the Australia-India Institute in Melbourne to host the first batch of students from DU. Campus facilities

Coffee break

The campus cafè is located near the new examination hall, close to the main gate. OPEN SIX DAYS of the week except Sundays/gazetted holidays, 8.30am - 5pm

Daily needs

The university's co-operative store sells items of everyday use like toiletry, stationery, etc (9am - 5pm)

Mail box

You can find the post office on campus near the main gate. Facilities such as speed post, registered post,
etc are available. It is open six days of the week except Sundays and gazetted holidays. Time: 9am to 4pm

Ticket to ride

The on-campus railway reservation counter is situated near the main gate. Students can avail of the services from
9AM TO 5PM.

Bank matters

State Bank of India's branch is located near the vice-chancellor's office. It provides facilities like teller, ATM, bill payment (electricity and water), deposits and educational loans, to name a few. Open on all six days of the week from 9am to 4pm in the evening. Closed on Sundays, bank holidays and gazetted holidays

Health factor

WUS Health Centre is located in the North Campus of Delhi University, adjacent to the arts faculty. The centre provides all kinds of medical facilities to students. Timings are from 8.30am to 5pm (emergency - 24 hrs)
