Super 30 boy makes grade

Ramesh Kumar has made both his parents and mentors proud with his admission to IIT-G. Kumar is one of the students of the famed Super 30, a coaching class for the exceptionally poor but super bright students in Patna.

The coaching class, where the mentors Pankaj Kumar and RP Singh offer free lodging and boarding to the students along with free coaching, has won national and international acclaim for its unique concept of giving equal opportunity to poor students to crack IIT-JEE.

Kumar is son of a point man in railways and has spent his childhood in penury as his parents fended to feed and educate their five children. Kumar has two brothers and two sisters. Kumar says that he had taken a loan of Rs 1 lakh for IIT coaching, but saved the money as he got admission in Super 30. "Over 1000 students appeared for the test of which 250 are selected. They were then subjected to further screening, bringing down the number of contenders to 100. Of these 30 are selected. I was very happy when I cracked the exam", Kumarsaid. He has scored the rank of 1564 in the IIT-JEE in the OBC category. Kumar has now used the money to pay the fee at IIT-G, so that his father does not have to compromise on paying the fee of his younger brothers, who are studying in class VII and X respectively.
