SC issues contempt notice to AIIMS Director

Updated on: Tuesday, July 19, 2011

The Supreme Court has issued a contempt notice to the Director and the Dean of the AIIMS seeking explanation from him for not complying with its order for granting admission to a student in a post-graduate course.

A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi objected to the decision of the AIIMS authorities to deny admission to one of its doctors eligible for the PG course and admit another candidate who was allegedly not eligible.

The bench asked the authorities to file its response and fixed the matter for further hearing on July 22.

The court passed the order on a petition filed by Dr Varun Agrawal, now working in the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS, challenging the decision of AIIMS for not granting him admission which was earlier directed by the court.

The petitioner pointed out that although the Institute had conducted counselling for one seat on the direction of the court it allowed admission to a candidate who was not eligible and he was illegally denied admission.
