The two-day round table conference held at ‘Canada-India Education Summit-2011' discussed on various topics including the joint programmes, credit transfer, recognition of degrees and joint research programmes between the two countries.

The summit was aimed at two great democracies – India and Canada – sharing a common commitment to the promotion of bilateral, intellectual and cultural linkages, said Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU) Vice-Chancellor C.R.Visweswara Rao, who attended as a delegate from Andhra Pradesh.

Mr.Rao who returned from Canada recently shared his experiences with the faculty and students.

He explained the importance of the education meet, held at Carleton University, Ottawa, and the topics that came for discussion with the intellectuals of both the countries. The summit was organised by Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, DFAIT, and the Association of Universities and Colleges in Canada ( AUCC).

Stating that the meet was a sequel to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Higher Education signed by Prime Minister Dr.Manmohan Singh in Canada in 2010, Mr.Rao observed that the summit is an important step in reinforcing bi-national academic collaborations.

The speakers discussed at length on ‘promotion of green and organic agriculture', ‘challenges to be faced by State and Central universities from private universities', ‘collaboration between the Indian and Canadian universities', ‘training for teachers in newer areas in research in Canada' and other issues, said Prof.Visweswara Rao.

Maintaining that the name of any institution is graded with the conduct of the examination system, VSU Registrar V.Narayana Reddy said the new university took several measures to conduct the degree and PG examinations in a fair manner, which were held for the first time after the establishment of the institution.

With the university conducting the examinations strictly without giving any scope for copying, students who worked hard scored highest percentage of marks in the examinations held this year.

A first year B.Sc (MSCs) student P.Triveni of Chandrareddy Degree College in Nellore, stood in the university by scoring 97.3 per cent marks, said Prof.Reddy.

The V-C and the Registrar complimented Ms.Triveni and presented a cash award for the student on the occasion. College correspondent Pratap Reddy and other staff complimented Triveni for being top scorer under VSU limits.
