Notice to Jamia Milia over non-fulfilment of disabled quota

Updated on: Friday, July 15, 2011

A government body has issued a show-cause notice to Jamia Milia Islamia for not fulfilling the reservation quota meant for the disabled.

The Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disability under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment asked the central University to "show cause" why candidates with disability were not called for interview for admissions to Diploma in Elementary Education Teaching (ETE) in Urdu.

The notice came in response to an application filed by Matloob Raza of Unicare NGO, complaining that the provision of the three per cent quota had been violated.

However, the University said the candidates with disability who had appeared for the entrance examination had not obtained even the qualifying marks.

The notice pointed out that the Section 39 of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995 requires all government institutions to reserve not less than three per cent of the seats for persons with disabilities.

It, therefore, asked the University to explain why the reserved seat was transferred to the unreserved category.

University Registrar Prof S M Sajid said the University will send its response to the authority tomorrow.

"We are following the reservation in accordance with the law. But, in this case, we found that the concerned candidates did not obtain the qualifying marks in the test and were therefore not called for interview," he told.

"The University has set qualifying marks at 33 per cent for undergraduate courses and 36 per cent for post graduate courses," he said.
