As part of its move to revamp the school education system in West Bengal, the state government is considering proposals to free children's minds of exam trauma by making tests upto eighth standard optional.

School education minister Bratya Basu said there would be 'no pass/fail system' any more upto class VIII. Neither there would be any unit test system as well as terminal and annual examinations.

"We think this is the way we can reduce the burden on our children," the minister said.

The new government would like to put more stress on English-speaking capability of a student, adding that a proposal was being considered to introduce a 50-mark test of spoken English from the primary level.

"Talks are on with eminent educationists and teachers in this regard," he said.

Basu said the proposals were being discussed at different levels and would be brought before the chief minister "at an appropriate level".
