Accreditation process must eliminate discretion: Sibal

Harping on the need to bring transparency in accreditation of institutes, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said the process should be such that it eliminates all forms of "discretion".

"The process should be such that we must eliminate all forms of discretion. What happens today that you evaluate on the basis of perception of the inpidual whom you sent there to evaluate. What you really have to do is to set up standards so that the element of discretion is absent," Sibal said.

This will not only bring confidence to institutions but also to the public, he said at a seminar organised by All India Management Association about accreditation process.

He said his Ministry has already moved the National Accreditation Regulatory Authority Bill in Parliament which will have institutions both at the national as well at the state level.

Stating that there is a "tension" going on in the eduction system on the issue of access and quality, the minister underscored the need to forging greater synergy between industry and other stakeholders to build the kind of institutes that the people are looking for.

Observing that a "revolution" is currently taking place in the education sector at present with more and more children attending schools, especially girls, he said providing quality education across all sectors including management education has, therefore, become an important task.

The National Board of Accreditation, on the occasion, brought out a manual for accreditation of business schools in India.
