Forensic college soon in Nagpur

The Maharashtra state Government has approved for setting up of a forensic science institute in Nagpur.

It will start functioning from the current academic session and will be affiliated to Nagpur University. In 2009 the government had set such institutes in Mumbai and Aurangabad, the third will now come up in the city.

A note issued by the government said a need was felt for starting diploma, graduate and post-graduate courses in forensic sciences looking into the growing criminal activity in high-technology fields involving cyber space, internet, hacking of websites, increased credit card frauds and mobile phone misuse,

The institute would have staff strength of 65. Initially it will be housed in the Government Science College and will shift to its own premises at a later stage, the note said. An advisory board of the government will help in getting the courses started from this session.

The cabinet has also approved setting up of a local experts group for the purpose. But it said that it would be advisable to have courses maintaining uniformity with the other two institutes.

It was also decided to sanction a total of Rs 5.35 crore for the year 2011-12 for the forensic institute. It will have powers to spend from the planned outlay.
