NID suspends two students in ragging case

National Institute of Design (NID) suspended two undergraduate students for a semester for ragging juniors, while another has been put on probation.

The decision was taken after submission of a detailed report by the anti-ragging committee of the institute following some complaints of ragging.

"Two students of graduate diploma programme in design have been suspended from the academic programme for one semester, while a student of post graduate diploma in design will be put on probation of one year but shall be allowed to attend the classes," NID Registrar Vijaya Deshmuk said.

"During the one-year period, his attendance, performance and behaviour will be monitored. In case his involvement is proven in any such incidents, his admission will be terminated," she said.

"The hostel facility provided to all the three students has been withdrawn for one semester," Deshmukh said.

The city-based institute had received a complaint and some e-mails regarding certain ragging incidents of freshers on the campus soon after the commencement of the new academic session here. The new session began from June 13.

The complaints made to NID by the parents of a few freshers alleged that their wards were forced to enter the room of seniors in night and then asked to get involved in certain activities, sources in NID had earlier said.

The anti-ragging committee, acting on the e-mail complaints of the parents, began an inquiry on June 20 and submitted a report yesterday, a NID official said.
