University awaits nod for more intake

Bharathidasan University's Model College here has evoked an overwhelming response from students in surrounding rural pockets in its second year since inception, prompting it to seek the State government's approval for starting additional sections for the three programmes: B.A. English, B.Com, and B.Sc. Computer Science in the 2011-12 academic year.

Of the total of 648 applications the constituent college has received, 278 were for B.A. English, 196 for B.Com. and the rest for B.Sc. Computer Science. The intake capacity, however, is 60 each for the first two courses and 40 for the third one, according to R. Saminathan, principal (in charge).

The college was functioning temporarily from the premises of Government Polytechnic. The university was exploring the scope to utilise classrooms in the adjoining high school so that more students, particularly girls, could be accommodated in the three courses, Vice-Chancellor K. Meena said, exuding hope that the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa would approve the proposal.

The university would also conduct through the constituent college the University Grants Commission-sponsored remedial coaching for SC/ST and minority students.
