CBSE cites TN order for relief to its students

The Central Board of Secondary Education has requested the state government to allow its students who have opted for school-based assessment to join junior colleges. In a letter to the government and to CBSE schools, the board has cited an order passed in Tamil Nadu in favour of such students. But in TN, schools are up to Class XII and there is no concept of junior college.

The letter sent by the central board chairman, Vineet Joshi, mentions that the passing percentage of students who have taken the school exam and board exam is almost the same (See box). The letter cites that the TN government, in a recent order, has stated that students from both test patterns should be at par. V Radha, in-charge secretary of school education, said, "In TN, schools are up to class XII, unlike the junior college concept in Maharashtra.

Students here miss out on admissions for the difference of one percentage." She added, "The CBSE did not think about the implications of the schoolbased assessment earlier. Sending a letter as late as last week shows that they have not thought about these issues before formulating the policy. Even the ICSE has issued an order refusing admissions to students who have taken the school test. It is not fair to the students who have taken the board exams in state across boards, which is very stressful than an exam conducted internally."
