Maharashtra seeks support from corporates to creat quality workforce

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan exhorted the corporate sector to  support the Government's effort in creating high quality workforce.

"We are an economy which cannot depend on natural resources for sustainable growth. Therefore to ensure that we maintain robust economic growth, we need to create high quality human resources...we need to build a knowledge economy.

And India Inc will have to play a major role in it," Chavan said addressing a gathering at the Mumbai University here.

The Mumbai University and the Indian Merchants' Chamber today signed a  memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create Pravinchandra V Gandhi Chair in Banking and Finance at the University.

"We have been spending on expanding facilities in the field of higher and technical education. But what is necessary today is to enforce quality aspect of knowledge.

Universities will have to play a major role in achieving this goal. At the same time, support needs to come from non-government organisations," Chavan said.

There is also a need to give special status to autonomous colleges so that they could function as separate universities, he said.

"Private-public-partnership needs to come into this sector. The Government alone cannot fund such initiatives. But if we get support from the private sector, we assure you that the Government will also provide matching funds for such initiatives," Chavan added.

The chief minister also informed that the government would institute a special fund for supporting private sector initiatives in the area of higher education.
