Maha to open model colleges in seven districts

Maharashtra government plans to open model colleges in seven districts where the gross enrolment ratio is less than the national average during the new
academic year.

The first college was thrown open for admissions in Hingoli district yesterday. Apart from Hingoli, the gross enrolment ratio is less in Jalna, Gadchiroli, Buldhana, Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, and Raigad districts.

Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education D P Sawant told PTI that the Hingoli college would be attached to the Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University in Nanded.

The total project is worth Rs eight crore out of which Rs 2.5 crore will be provided by the University Grants Commission while the rest would be contributed by the state government.

The colleges in seven districts are being set up because access to education is less, Sawant said.

Admissions in Hingoli college will start soon. Five courses including industrial accounting, applied sciences, computer applications, business administration will be taught, he said.

There are 374 districts in the country where gross enrolment ratio is less than the national average of 12.44 percent.
