Campaign to highlight importance of chemistry

The Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) is organising a campaign comprising a series of programmes in connection with International Year of Chemistry.

Named ‘Rasathanthram: Jeevithavum Bhaaviyum' (Chemistry: Life and the Future), the campaign seeks to highlight the importance of chemistry in various spheres of human activity. A training camp was organised here on Sunday for resource persons taking part in the campaign.

A. Jayakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Kerala, inaugurated the camp held at Government Higher Secondary School, Peroorkada. P.K. Raveendran, C.P. Aravindakshan, V. Harilal and G. Suresh spoke on the occasion. Former Mayor J. Chandra presided over the function.

Classes on Chemistry in Agriculture, Chemistry in the Kitchen, Adulteration on Food Materials, Chemistry in Human Body, Life and Contribution of Mary Curie, and Chemistry of Consumer Items were the highlight of the camp.

Jacob John, Associate Professor, Kerala Agricultural University; P.K. Raveendram, former Registrar, Integrated Rural Technology Centre, Palakkad; P. Nisha, NIIST; Aneesh T.C., Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram; C.P. Aravindakshan, and M.R. Sudarshana Kumar, M.G. College, Thiruvananthapuram, were among those who handled the sessions. Nearly 200 resource persons attended the camp.

The KSSP has announced plans to conduct classes in schools, colleges, resident's associations and libraries on various subjects of chemistry connected with daily life. Seminars, exhibitions and discussions will be conducted in panchayat, municipal and corporation areas, a pressnote issued by the KSSP says.
