Move on Samacheer Kalvi may hit future generations

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government's decision to defer the implementation of equitable standard education (Samacheer Kalvi) may harm future generations, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said on Wednesday.

Answering queries from reporters at the Anna Arivalayam after chairing a meeting of DMK legislators, Mr. Karunanidhi recalled how the system of equitable standard education was introduced. It was designed after several studies, consultations with political leaders and the approval of eminent academics.

To a question on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's announcement against the revival of Legislative Council, the DMK leader said that the response was on expected lines. Asked for his reaction to the AIADMK government's decisions reversing the DMK government's schemes, he replied that it was for the voters to repent.

To a question on the reported remark by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam leader Kumaran Pathmanathan on the influence of DMK ideology in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Mr. Karunanidhi said that he did not know who he was or what he had said.

On his visit to New Delhi, Mr. Karunanidhi said that though there was an opportunity, he avoided meeting Congress president Sonia Gandhi as it would not be “appropriate” to meet her when his daughter Kanimozhi, arrested in connection with the spectrum allocation scam case, was in prison.

On Ms. Kanimozhi's petition in the Delhi High Court for bail, he said that she had told him that she would face the case with determination and courage. “Kani and I hope that justice will be rendered, as per law.”
