After a more than three decade gap, University of Madras will offer a four-year B.Com (honours) programme in select colleges in the city.

"We have revived the four-year programme in commerce after 30 years. It will be offered in around 10 colleges in the city," Dr G Thiruvasagam, Vice Chancellor, University of Madras said.

The university has received approval from the University Grants Commission. The colleges chosen to offer the programme need a 'A' grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

"In the programme, more than 60 per cent of the time will be spent with the industry," he added.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function organised by the Department of Criminology, Thiruvasagam said no academic programme would be successful unless non academicians are involved from designing the syllabus to the final assessment of the students.

Emphasising the importance of focusing on the employability factor, he said even arts and science departments need to have the training factor.

The Department of Criminology successfully placed all its students to four private companies.

The University, with 72 departments, will be offering 11 new PG rogrammes.
