The need to campaign for a Common School System was underscored by educationists and academicians at a seminar on ‘Common syllabus to common schools', organised by the State Platform for Common School System here on Tuesday.

The meeting called for establishing a strong public education system.

“There should be stringent implementation of every clause of the Right To Education Act, particularly in private schools,” said Vasanthi Devi, Chairperson, Institute of Human Rights Education.

Speakers said that the demarcation that exists between public and private schools in the country should be abolished.

The private schools should also get transformed into neighbourhood schools by making them accessible to all, said P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary, State Platform for Common School System.

N. Sankaraiah, CPI (M) leader, said that education should be under the purview of the State government.

S. Muthukumaran, Chairman of the Samacheer Kalvi Committee, spoke on the need for autonomous bodies that frame the syllabus and supervise schools run by the government. The book ‘Pothukkalvi', which is a compilation of questions on the ‘Samacheer Kalvi' and its clarifications, was also released on the occasion.
