Girls outscore boys in getting post-matric scholarships

Government's move to aid educational activities among minorities through scholarships seems to have gone down well with the fair sex among these communities with girls outscoring boys in getting post-matric scholarships from the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
As per the latest figures out of 5.25 lakh post matric scholarships disbursed among minority students by the Ministry of Minority Affairs in 2010-11, 51 per cent beneficiaries were girls. This at a time when only 30 per cent scholarship are reserved for girl students, an official release said here.
    
The ministry exceeded its target of disbursing four lakh post-matric scholarships in the last financial year. This scholarship is given to students from class XI up to Ph.D, it said, adding that the girls also got more than 48 per cent of the pre-Matric scholarships.
    
In the pre-matric scholarship scheme, more than 48 per cent of the beneficiaries were girl students, which the ministry described as a "big success".
    
"For 2010-11, the achievement is 44.21 lakh as against the target of 20 lakh. Of these, 48.15 percent are girl students," a government release said.
    
This scholarship scheme started in 2008-09 is given to students from class one to ten and a total of 66.63 lakh scholarships have been awarded till the last financial year. The target for 2011-12 is 27 lakh scholarships.
    
The scheme was launched in the year 2007-08 and 11.08 lakh scholarships have been awarded till 31st March 2011. The target for the current financial year is 4.5 lakh fresh scholarships and a budget of Rs 450 crore has been allocated for the scheme.
