US embassy today gifted 1,000 books to ten city schools to mark the friendship of US First Lady Michelle Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur.

Sally Roemer, wife of US ambassador Timothy Roemer, presented the books to the schools at a function here attended by Culture Secretary Jawahar Sircar and Delhi Public Library Chairperson Shailaja Chandra.

"The books are a symbol of the friendship between US First Lady Michelle Obama and Gursharan Kaur (wife of Prime Minister Manmmohan Singh)," a US embassy statement said.

The books represent a mix of story books and fun, informative non-fiction designed to introduce primary and secondary students to American history, culture and historical figures.

The US ambassador's wife recalled the visit of US president Barack Obama and Michelle in November last year and said the US President and the First Lady were impressed with the eagerness of Indian youth to learn.

In addition to books, the schools also received complimentary membership to American Library and the option for an American volunteer to visit the school to read the books at a later date.
