Power tariffs for Govt schools, hospitals in M'rashtra to drop

Updated on: Monday, April 11, 2011

Government-run schools and hospitals in Maharashtra may have to pay less for electricity soon.
The Government is preparing a tariff proposal whereby the electricity rates for schools and hospitals will be lesser than the current rates, the Legislative Council was informed.

"We would recommend to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) on applying rates to the Government-aided and the Government-run schools almost equal to residential rates," Minister of State for Energy Rajendra Mulak said.

Power to educational institutions and hospitals is at present charged as per commercial rates, which was higher than the residential rates.

MLC Rajan Teli pointed out that the schools are paying commercial power tariff rates and these should be brought down to residential levels, as the educational institutions and hospitals work for social causes.

The Minister, however, said a final decision is to be taken by the power regulatory body.
