Government to soon finalise national vaccine policy

Updated on: Saturday, April 09, 2011

India will soon finalise its maiden national vaccine policy. According to former director general of Indian Council of Medical Research, Dr N K Ganguly, India has not introduced a single new vaccine in its national immunisation programme since the early 1980s. Once a national policy is in place, the Union health ministry will know exactly what vaccines the country needs, what are the emerging vaccines and what are the vaccines that need to be developed for the future.

Union health secretary K Chandramouli, who will chair a meeting soon, will discuss the proposed policy threadbare. Dr Ganguly told TOI, “The policy will help India vaccinate majority of its people with relevant vaccines based on evidence.”
