Chennai - a martitime training hub in India

 With over 70 per cent of the training institutes located in and around Chennai, the city has become the "training capital for maritime in India," senior official of Maritime Merchantile Department (MMD) said here.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the National Maritime Week celebrations, P Mishra, Principal Officer of MMD said there were over 128 training institutes including 20 major ones and called Indian Maritime University, the future of maritime education.
 
Maritime contributed to country's exchequer, besides employment opportunities to youngsters, Mishra said that it was economically very viable to cargo transport.
 
On the coastal security in the region, Mishra said post 26/11, security has been tightened.
 
India, with a coastline of over 7,500 km has over 13 major and 187 minor ports.
 
National Maritime Day is celebrated on April 5 every year and the theme for this year was 'Indian Coastline - A new oppurtunity.'
