CBSE modifies conventional typewriting subject

Updated on: Tuesday, April 05, 2011

Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has modified conventional typewriting syllabus for secondary school students into e-typewriting.

In the present scenario, to make the typewriting subject more functional to meet the increasing use of computers at offices, the board has decided to replace the existing course with an e-typewriting course, a CBSE circular stated.

The course is being offered as an additional subject to secondary school students in schools affiliated to CBSE. The e-typewriting course will be introduced in class 9 from the next academic year, while class 10 students will get to learn it from the 2012-2013 academic year.

The syllabus includes proper keyboarding techniques, editing a variety of documents using word processor and spreadsheet software and correcting common typing errors using spell check. Touch typewriting (including correct sitting posture), page setting, table creation, cut-copy-paste functions, totaling word count and keyboard shortcuts form part of the subject. E-tutorials and free tutor software links are provided so students can better their typing speed and accuracy.

The updated e-typewriting syllabus would also require students to acquire some basic internet skills, such as how to use a web browser, conduct a basic search using a search engine, compose and send e-mails, attach a document to a message and create and maintain lists of e-mail addresses.

Private typewriting institutes have welcomed the modification. S Sekar, principal, The Stenographer's Guild, which offers typewriting and shorthand courses, told that the change will be very useful and will meet the present demand of the society. These changes have been incorporated in their training.
