Making a major difference

Updated on: Tuesday, March 29, 2011

The role of human resources (HR) in any organisation has evolved and diversified. An HR professional has become a business partner in the organisation by providing growth opportunities for the employees keeping in mind the need of the employer. HR is now providing an insight into the career and life of an employee and is even impacting board decisions in terms of hiring new employees.

INDUSTRY STATUS

For any industry, the HR department plays a key role. HR is growing and gaining more recognition as a business enabler. When a group in an organisation is given training in a particular field, a new talent pool emerges. The role of the HR is to recruit the right kind of employees, who will add value to the already existing talent pool of the organisation. In the coming years, HR will evolve as a business partner by contributing to the overall growth of any organisation.

GROWTH AREAS

Growth areas in HR are linked with how the industry and its functions are evolving. Traditional industries are transforming to keep up with the new ones. This is giving rise to newer economies, which are emerging by adopting cutting edge practices. Working under unions is no longer a viable path for the growth of an organisation. For any organisation, there can be growth in two waysdepth-wise and width-wise . Depth-wise organisational growth would mean dealing with people from all levels — from a trainee to a top-level person, who has done his PhD. On the other hand, width-wise organisational growth would mean managing the huge diversity of the workforce.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Freshers must have a positive attitude and must have the ability to work with people and work through them to get the desired results. A fresher must be able to take inputs from various sources and add value to the inputs and give it back to the sources. A fresher must also possess an analytical mind and should be able to understand a problem in multiple dimensions and look for solutions. The other important quality that one must possess or strive to build is in the area of networking.

REMUNERATION

The remuneration varies from organisation to organisation but a trainee could get anywhere between Rs 3 and 6 lakh depending on their academic qualifications and work experience. A fresher who has at least two-years of work experience is expected to get a higher package as compared to someone who has no industry experience . The promotion opportunities for an employee are entirely driven by goals. It is measured by the employees previous year's performance.
